WPI Mentioned in Ms. Magazine!!

We are delighted to announce that the Women & Politics Institute is highlighted in Ms. Magazine’s 2009 Guide to Women’s Studies. Ms. Magazine is known for its extensive coverage of international women’s issues and has been a major feminist voice since 1971. The spring issue of Ms. contains a 16-page guide to more than 650 women’s studies programs in the United States. American University and the Women & Politics Institute are highlighted because of our excellent programs for both undergraduate and graduate students, specifically the Women, Policy, and Political Leadership program.

WPPL alumna Kelly Baden of the class of 2004 is quoted in the article. In it, she says “Women’s studies gave me the tools to work within the system for social change. It also gave me a sense of community during and after my undergraduate years. For the past eight years, I have worked for civic and political organizations, specifically focusing on public policy for reproductive rights advocacy organizations. Women’s studies taught me to not fear networking!"

Kelly is a 2004 alumnus of the WPPL Graduate certificate program, which provides young women with the knowledge and experience needed to become a leader in the field of politics, government, and the non-profit sector. This program gives students not only in-depth theoretical knowledge on women and politics, but also the opportunity to learn to evaluate current issues with leading practitioners and experts. Students in the WPPL programs build professional networks, develop their leadership skills, and advance their careers. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in the Women & Politics Institute’s Congressional Fellows Program that places them on Capitol Hill in career-building internships with women members of Congress.
